Flying passenger vehicle of the future

We’re still a few years away from the next Olympic Games, set to be held in Japan, but plans are already being put in place for a new way to light the iconic Olympic flame – using a flying car.

The challenge to have a flying car take part in the Olympics has been picked up by Toyota, which has invested nearly £275,000 to support the project. So far, crowdfunding has enabled the development of a ‘flying car’ which uses drone technology with three wheels and four rotors.

It has been called the ‘Skydrive car’ and is claimed to be the world’s smallest flying car. It measures less than 10 feet by just over 4 feet and its makers reckon it can travel 10m above the ground and up to speeds of 62mph.

The team behind the car is hoping that the prototype could be used to light the Olympic flame when Tokyo hosts the summer games in 2020. That would certainly be an eye-opener given how memorable the jet pack man was at the opening of the LA Olympic Games in 1984.

It’s not just on the track, in the velodrome or in the pool that the Olympics inspires excellence. That continuous pursuit of greatness, innovation and delivering exceptional moments is something that the ALPHERA team can well and truly get behind!
