BMW Invests €200m In Battery Tech
ALPHERA Financial Services welcomes the announcement that BMW is investing €200m in battery technology, as it continues to push its electric car capabilities.
The new investment (£178 million) will be spread over a four-year period in a battery cell research centre in Munich. This is in line with the car manufacturer’s ambitions to electrify its entire range, with plans to offer 25 full electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles by 2025.
The investment will deliver a new battery cell competence centre which is due to open in early 2019. The centre will specialise in the chemical reactions in battery cells, helping to create 200 new jobs. It will focus on further improvements in battery performance, lifespan, safety, charging and costs.
BMW is currently developing its fifth generation of electric powertrains, expected to be launched in 2021. The full range of this new vehicle will be able to reach 700km (430 miles) on a single charge.
As the motor industry continues to be transformed by electrification, it’s fantastic to see this investment from BMW, as it embraces of change and innovation.
